The archive of Balé Popular do Recife accompanies the history of the company itself. Its records document creative processes, performances, research, travels, encounters, training and the many generations that have crossed this journey. More than testimonies of the past, these materials help us understand how an artistic language was built and remains alive.
1976—1977 · A HISTORY IS BORN
Even before its premiere, the research that would give rise to Balé Popular do Recife was already appearing in newspapers. The institutional archive preserves records from Diário de Pernambuco from 1976 and May 1977, documents accompanying the transition from Grupo Circense de Dança Popular to Balé Popular do Recife.
Research led by André Madureira observed and documented traditions such as bumba-meu-boi, caboclinhos, maracatu and pastoril. This process lies at the origin of the language the company would develop.
